HIV and AIDS

HIV and AIDS is the single biggest threat to development in Namibia. Current reports put the infecyion rate at 19.9% among pregnant women. It is estimated that about 230 000 people are living with HIV and AIDS. The most affected age group is 30-34, posing a significant threat to human development. In Namibia, HIV and AIDS is primarily spread through sexual contact, but is is fuelled by the following: Poverty and inequality; alcohol and substance abuse; unprotected sex and multiple sexual partners; gender-based violence and inequality; high mobile populations and cross border travel and stigma and discrimination. While there is no cure for HIV and AIDS, there are ways to live a long and healthy life with the disease. UNDP Namibia is committed to working alongside the government to ensure that HIV and AIDS remains a top development priority and that each and every Namibian has access to prevention, care and support services.
