Welcome message from the UNDP Resident Representative

Welcome to our new website! UNDP is delighted to make information on our activities in Namibia available to our partners and the public at large.
The Declaration of Namibia’s Independence on 21 March 1990 concluded more than 40 years of struggle supported by 20 UN resolutions. During the struggle the UN provided political, humanitarian and development support to Namibians in exile and assisted in the preparations and the implementation of the first free elections of Namibia through what was called the UN Transition Assistance Group (UNTAG). The support of the UN to Namibia has continued after independence in 1990 through the UN programmes and funds until today. Today, UNDP, alongside its sister agencies, is among the longest standing and development partners to the Government of Namibia.
As a partner to Namibia in its development efforts, UNDP’s priority in Namibia is to support the Government to reach its Vision 2030, and attain the Millennium Development Goals and improving its Human Rights and Governance by focusing on three inter-related programme areas; Poverty Reduction; Energy and Environment; and HIV and AIDS. These core programmes are supported by a Strategic Policy Unit that provides strategy and policy analysis support to UNDP and its specific programmes .Other areas of support include enhancing capacity at all levels for national development, development communication and advocacy, and support for achieving global and national development goals and objectives. In all our focus areas, mainstreaming gender equality and human rights stand at the core.
UNDP also collaborates with all other UN agencies within the broader UN System to harmonize development and improve administrative systems, strive for programmatic coherence and mutual reinforcement through the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF). The UNDAF is one of the elements of the global UN reforms agenda that aims to maximize goal-oriented development co-operation in support of Namibia's development vision and goals. The combined mandates of the UN system, both resident and non-resident agencies, on cross-cutting and multi-sectoral issues have continued to provide the most effective mechanism for development assistance to Namibia.
The unique strength of UNDP is based on its global mandate and comparative advantages to bring about sustainable and equitable development. These qualities of UNDP have been demonstrated continuously in its support to Namibia. As a reliable development partner, UNDP, together with the other agencies in the UN System is committed to support Namibia in its endeavors to fight poverty and HIV and AIDS and build a brighter future for all Namibian citizens.
